Optimized and automated estimation of vegetation properties: Opportunities for Sentinel-2
2014
Hyperspectral response of agronomic variables to background optical variability: Results of a numerical experiment
2022
Understanding how biophysical and biochemical variables contribute to the spectral characteristics of vegetation canopies is critical for their monitoring. Quantifying these contributions, however, remains difficult due to extraneous factors such as the spectral variability of canopy background materials, including soil/crop-residue moisture, soil-type, and non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV). This study focused on exploring the spectral response of two important agronomic variables (1) leaf chlorophyll content (Cab ) and (2) leaf area index (LAI) under various canopy backgrounds through a global sensitivity analysis of wheat-like canopy spectra simulated using the physically-based PROSAIL …
Retrieving and Validating Leaf and Canopy Chlorophyll Content at Moderate Resolution: A Multiscale Analysis with the Sentinel-3 OLCI Sensor
2021
ESA’s Eighth Earth Explorer mission “FLuorescence EXplorer” (FLEX) will be dedicated to the global monitoring of the chlorophyll fluorescence emitted by vegetation. In order to properly interpret the measured fluorescence signal, essential vegetation variables need to be retrieved concomitantly. FLEX will fly in tandem formation with Sentinel-3 (S3), which conveys the Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) that is designed to characterize the atmosphere and the terrestrial vegetation at a spatial resolution of 300 m. In support of FLEX’s preparatory activities, this paper presents a first validation exercise of OLCI vegetation products against in situ data coming from the 2018 FLEXSense cam…
Canopy chlorophyll content and LAI estimation from Sentine1-2: Vegetation indices and Sentine1-2 Leve1-2A automatic products comparison
2019
The aim of this work is to analyze different methodologies for the estimation of leaf area index (LAI) and canopy chlorophyll content (CCC), using the Sentine1-2 satellite. LAI and CCC are biophysical parameters indicator of crop health state and fundamental in the productivity prediction. The purpose is to define the most optimal LAI and CCC estimation method for operational use in the monitoring of agricultural areas. Moreover, the CCC and LAI automatic products obtained directly through the Sentinel Application Platform Software (SNAP) biophysical processor and Sentine1-2 images by means of an artificial neural network (ANN) are validated. On the other hand, common vegetation indices use…
Comparison of Crop Trait Retrieval Strategies Using UAV-Based VNIR Hyperspectral Imaging.
2021
Hyperspectral cameras onboard unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently emerged for monitoring crop traits at the sub-field scale. Different physical, statistical, and hybrid methods for crop trait retrieval have been developed. However, spectra collected from UAVs can be confounded by various issues, including illumination variation throughout the crop growing season, the effect of which on the retrieval performance is not well understood at present. In this study, four retrieval methods are compared, in terms of retrieving the leaf area index (LAI), fractional vegetation cover (fCover), and canopy chlorophyll content (CCC) of potato plants over an agricultural field for six dates duri…
Electrochromic absorbance changes in the chlorophyll-c-containing alga Pleurochloris meiringensis (Xanthophyceae)
1994
Flash-induced absorbance changes were measured in the Chl-c-containing alga Pleurochloris meiringensis (Xanthophyceae) between 430 and 570 nm. In addition to the bands originating from redox changes of cytochromes, three major positive and tow negative transient bands were observed both 0.7 and 20 ms after the exciting flash. These transient bands peaking at 520, 480 and 451 nm and 497 and 465 nm, respectively, could be assigned to an almost homogeneous shift of the absorbance bands with maxima at 506, 473 and 444 nm, respectively. The shape of the absorbance transients elicited from PS I or PS II was identical, and the two photosystems contributed nearly equally to the absorbance changes. …
Physiological Aspects of Nitrogen Fertilizer Impact on Latvian Origin Cannabis Sativa L .
2015
The aim of the present study was to evaluate nitrogen fertilizer impact on photosynthesis and yield of hemp, applying modern non-destructive methods. The main object of the investigation – hemp cultivar of Latvian origin ‘Pūriņi’. Laboratory and field experiments showed diverse effects of different nitrogen fertilizer doses on various parameters. Additional nitrogen fertilizer dose of 60 kg ha-1 is most effective as evaluated by chlorophyll content in hemp leaves and changes of chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters. Nitrogen fertilizer negatively affected fiber content in hemp stems, therefore while cultivating hemp only for fiber production use of nitrogen fertilizer should be reduced. Acc…
Chlorophyll A Fluorescence and Chlorophyll Content in Parmelia Quercina Thalli from a Polluted Region of Northern Castellon (Spain)
1996
AbstractMeasurements of modulated chlorophyll a fluorescence emission and chlorophyll content were made in thalli of Parmelia quercina collected from northern Castellon(Spain). Althoug high air pollution concentrations have been measured in this area, the ratio of variable to maximal fluorescence is unaffected. Following dark-adaptation, the response to irradiance of chlorophyll fluorescence was examined. With respect to control samples, thalli collected in northern Castellon consistently showed differences in fluorescence quenching, the efficiency of excitation energy capture and quenching of basal fluorescence. However, the quantum ield of photochemistry and non-cyclic electron flow were …
Purification and identification of chlorophyll c1 from the green alga Mantoniella squamata
1987
Abstract The prasinophycean alga Mantoniella squamata contains besides chlorophyll a and b a third chlorophyll c -like pigment in its light-harvesting antenna. This third chlorophyll was purified by reverse phase and polyethylene chromatography in order to identify its chemical structure. The absorption and fluorescence spectra were measured not only from the doubly purified pigment, but also from its Mg-free derivates. The spectra were compared with those of authentic chlorophyll c and of Mg-2,4-desethyl-2,4-divinylpheoporphyrin a 5 monomethyl ester which was isolated from Rhodobacter capsulata . The results show that the pigment from Mantoniella agrees best with chlorophyll c 1 . In order…
Energy transfer and pigment composition in three chlorophyll b-containing light-harvesting complexes isolated from Mantoniella squamata (Prasinophyce…
1986
Light-harvesting Chl a/b protein complexes were isolated from the higher plant Sinapis alba, the green alga Chlorella fusca, and the prasinophycean alga Mantoniella squamata by mild gel electrophoresis. The energy transfer from chlorophyll b and the accessory xanthophyll was measured by means of fluoresence spectroscopy at 77 K. The pigment composition of the isolated antenna complexes was determined by high performance liquid chromatography in order to calculate the number of light absorbing molecules per chlorophyll a in the different light-harvesting complexes. These results were complemented by the quantitation of the pigments in total thylakoids as well as in the different electrophore…
