Comparison of Crop Trait Retrieval Strategies Using UAV-Based VNIR Hyperspectral Imaging.
2021
Hyperspectral cameras onboard unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently emerged for monitoring crop traits at the sub-field scale. Different physical, statistical, and hybrid methods for crop trait retrieval have been developed. However, spectra collected from UAVs can be confounded by various issues, including illumination variation throughout the crop growing season, the effect of which on the retrieval performance is not well understood at present. In this study, four retrieval methods are compared, in terms of retrieving the leaf area index (LAI), fractional vegetation cover (fCover), and canopy chlorophyll content (CCC) of potato plants over an agricultural field for six dates duri…
The Molecular Analysis of the Light Adaptation Reactions in the Yellow‐green Alga Pleurochloris meiringensis (Xanthophyceae)
1988
The xanthophycean alga Pleurochloris meiringensis was homocontinuously cultured under high light (16 W/m2) and low light (2 W/m2) conditions. In low light cells, the chlorophyll a content and the dry weight on per cell basis is increased, the maximal photosynthetic capacity per chlorophyll is decreased. The content of chlorophyll c, vaucheriaxanthin-ester and heteroxanthin is similar in both cultures, whereas the content of diadinoxanthin and s-carotene is twice as high in high light cultures. High light cells contain more photosystem I and cytochrome f per chlorophyll than low light cells, whereas the QB content is found to be unchanged. Therefore, the ratio reaction center II/reaction cen…
Seasonal Mapping of Irrigated Winter Wheat Traits in Argentina with a Hybrid Retrieval Workflow Using Sentinel-2 Imagery
2022
Earth observation offers an unprecedented opportunity to monitor intensively cultivated areas providing key support to assess fertilizer needs and crop water uptake. Routinely, vegetation traits mapping can help farmers to monitor plant development along the crop’s phenological cycle, which is particularly relevant for irrigated agricultural areas. The high spatial and temporal resolution of the Sentinel-2 (S2) multispectral instrument leverages the possibility to estimate leaf area index (LAI), canopy chlorophyll content (CCC), and vegetation water content (VWC) from space. Therefore, our study presents a hybrid retrieval workflow combining a physically-based strategy with a machine learni…
Isolation of chlorophyll-protein complexes and quantification of electron transport components in Synura petersenii and Tribonema aequale
1983
The chlorophyll-protein complexes of the yellow alga Synura petersenii (Chrysophyceae) and the yellow-green alga Tribonema aequale (Xanthophyceae) were studied. The sodiumdodecylsulfate/sodiumdesoxycholate solubilized photosynthetic membranes of these species yielded three distinct pigment-protein complexes and a non-proteinuous zone of free pigments, when subjected to SDS polyacrylamid gel electrophoresis. The slowest migrating protein was identical to complex I (CP I), the P-700 chlorophyll a-protein, which possessed 60 chlorophyll a molecules per reaction center in Tribonema and 108 in Synura. The zone of intermediate mobility contained chlorophyll a and carotenoids. The absorption spect…
Development of the photosynthetic apparatus during light-dependent greening of a mutant of Chlorella fusca.
1977
The formation of chlorophyll, cytochrome f, P-700, ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase as well as photosynthesis and Hill reaction activities were tested during the light-dependent greening process of the Chlorella fusca mutant G 10. Neither chlorophyll nor protochlorophyllide was detected in the darkgrown cells. When transferred to light the mutant cells developed chlorophyll and established its photosynthetic capacity after a short lag phase. In the in vivo absorption spectra a spectral shift of the red absorption peak position from 674 to 680 nm was indicated during the first 3 h of greening. Cytochrome f was already present in the dark-grown cells, but during the greening phase a threefol…
Evaluation of Sentinel-2 Red-Edge Bands for Empirical Estimation of Green LAI and Chlorophyll Content
2011
ESA’s upcoming satellite Sentinel-2 will provide Earth images of high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution and aims to ensure continuity for Landsat and SPOT observations. In comparison to the latter sensors, Sentinel-2 incorporates three new spectral bands in the red-edge region, which are centered at 705, 740 and 783 nm. This study addresses the importance of these new bands for the retrieval and monitoring of two important biophysical parameters: green leaf area index (LAI) and chlorophyll content (Ch). With data from several ESA field campaigns over agricultural sites (SPARC, AgriSAR, CEFLES2) we have evaluated the efficacy of two empirical methods that specifically make use of the…
Estimating biophysical variable dependences with kernels
2010
This paper introduces a nonlinear measure of dependence between random variables in the context of remote sensing data analysis. The Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC) is a kernel method for evaluating statistical dependence. HSIC is based on computing the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of the cross-covariance operator of mapped samples in the corresponding Hilbert spaces. The HSIC empirical estimator is very easy to compute and has good theoretical and practical properties. We exploit the capabilities of HSIC to explain nonlinear dependences in two remote sensing problems: temperature estimation and chlorophyll concentration prediction from spectra. Results show that, when the relationshi…
Water-depth effects in photosynthetic pigment content of the benthic algae Dictyota dichotoma and Udotea petiolata
1981
Abstract The effect of water depth on the light-harvesting pigments contents in Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) Lamouroux and Udotea petiolata (Turra) Borgesen was studied. Both species showed higher photosynthetic-pigments contents with increased depth or shade. The ratios of chlorophyll c /chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b / chlrophyll a in D. dichotoma and U. petiolata were lower in light-exposed samples. In D. dichotoma , the ratios of fucoxanthin to chlorophyll a increased with depth or shade; however, it is worth noting that the 0 m (sun) samples showed the highest values. On the other hand, total carotenoids to chlorophyll a ratios in U. petiolata increased with depth.
Energy transfer and pigment composition in three chlorophyll b-containing light-harvesting complexes isolated from Mantoniella squamata (Prasinophyce…
1986
Light-harvesting Chl a/b protein complexes were isolated from the higher plant Sinapis alba, the green alga Chlorella fusca, and the prasinophycean alga Mantoniella squamata by mild gel electrophoresis. The energy transfer from chlorophyll b and the accessory xanthophyll was measured by means of fluoresence spectroscopy at 77 K. The pigment composition of the isolated antenna complexes was determined by high performance liquid chromatography in order to calculate the number of light absorbing molecules per chlorophyll a in the different light-harvesting complexes. These results were complemented by the quantitation of the pigments in total thylakoids as well as in the different electrophore…
Hybrid retrieval of crop traits from multi-temporal PRISMA hyperspectral imagery
2022
The recently launched and upcoming hyperspectral satellite missions, featuring contiguous visible-to-shortwave infrared spectral information, are opening unprecedented opportunities for the retrieval of a broad set of vegetation traits with enhanced accuracy through novel retrieval schemes. In this framework, we exploited hyperspectral data cubes collected by the new-generation PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa (PRISMA) satellite of the Italian Space Agency to develop and test a hybrid retrieval workflow for crop trait mapping. Crop traits were mapped over an agricultural area in north-east Italy (Jolanda di Savoia, FE) using PRISMA images collected during the 2020 and 202…
